TORRINGTON, CT (WFSB) – Route 8 northbound in Torrington was closed early Thursday morning because a tractor trailer ended up hanging off an overpass.
Its driver was pronounced dead on the scene.
Torrington police identified the victim as Mahamadou Keita, 44, of Darby, PA.
Dispatchers said they received calls for a motor vehicle collision that involved the tractor-trailer on the overpass, which was between exits 45 and 46, around 5 a.m.
State police confirmed that the tractor-trailer was involved in a collision on Greenwoods Road at the intersection with Hayden Hill Road.
Dispatchers said the vehicle was partially hanging off the Route 8 overpass.
The out-of-state tractor trailer driver was heading north on Hayden Hill Road when he, for an unknown reason, started striking many mail boxes as he approached Greenwoods Road intersection.
Emergency crews said they were unable to get to the tractor portion of the vehicle as the trailer had fallen on top of it.
Police said Keita was the only person involved.
They continue to look into what caused Keita to crash.
They asked anyone with potential surveillance video of the incident to give them a call.
Greenwoods Road and Route 8 both reopened later in the day.
