Join us on Monday 12 December where a tulip tree will be planted in tribute to HM Queen Elizabeth II.
Following the death of HM Queen Elizabeth II in September, West Berkshire Council wished to create a lasting legacy in memory of our former long reigning monarch.
On Monday 12 December 2022 at 11.00am, HM Lord-Lieutenant for the Royal County of Berkshire, Mr James Puxley, and the Chairman of West Berkshire Council, Councillor Rick Jones, will be planting a Tulip Tree (Liriodendron tulipifera) at Stroud Green in Newbury in tribute to HM Queen Elizabeth II.
A tulip tree has been chosen as it is said to have been one of HM Queen Elizabeth II’s favourite trees and the location close to Newbury Racecourse was selected as the late Queen was a regular visitor to the Racecourse and a keen horsewoman.
The tree will be planted using special soil improver that has been produced by our Waste Services contractor, Veolia, using flowers laid by the public in tribute to HM Queen Elizabeth II back September.
We are honoured that HM Lord-Lieutenant for the Royal County of Berkshire, Mr James Puxley, will be joining us for this special occasion along with other guests including, Mr Julian Thick, Chief Executive Officer of Newbury Racecourse, and members of Greener Greenham, a community tree planting group who are very active in the local area.
Members of the public are very welcome to join us for the ceremony which will last around 30 minutes. Please arrive by 10:45am for a prompt 11:00am start.
Councillor Rick Jones, Chairman of West Berkshire Council, said:
"Everyone in West Berkshire was greatly saddened by the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II back in September.
"In addition to our Thanksgiving event that took place on 4 November, we feel that the planting of a beautiful tulip tree is a way of creating a lasting legacy to the memory of the late Queen. It is our way to pay tribute and give thanks for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s many years of dedicated service."
HM Lord-Lieutenant for the Royal County of Berkshire, Mr James Puxley said:
"The planting of one of our late Queen’s favourite trees at a venue close to a racecourse that she visited frequently is a lovely and very loyal gesture by West Berkshire Council. We all look forward to seeing this tree grow and flourish in memory of our much loved monarch."
