New Holland is showing a prototype of an electric and autonomous tractor. The so-called T4 Electric Power has a battery and delivers up to 120 hp. A Case IH variant will follow. Production will start in late 2023.
New Holland shows a prototype of an electric and autonomous tractor at a Tech Day organised by parent company CNH Industrial in Arizona (USA). It is a T4 Electric Power developed through collaboration between the R&D centre in Burr Ridge (Illinois), the tractor factory in Italy, and Monarch Tractor. The latter is a California-based tractor manufacturer focusing on electrification and autonomy.
CNH Industrial has an exclusive, multi-year licensing agreement for electrification technologies with Monarch Tractor. CNH Industrial also owns a minority stake in Silicon Valley-based Monarch Tractor.

The T4 delivers up to 120 hp of engine power, up to 440 Nm of torque and drives up to 40 km/h. According to CNH Industrial, the battery pack, details of which were not disclosed, has enough storage capacity for one working day, depending on the deployment profile. With a quick-charge system, the battery would be fully charged in one hour.
The electric and autonomous tractor also provides power for external use, allowing it to serve as a generator. The power can also be used to power implements, although the tractor is still equipped with conventional hydraulics and a PTO. Interestingly, the tractor is equipped with sockets and you would be allowed to use them for welding or drilling.

Besides electric, the T4 Electric Power also drives autonomously. To this end, the cab is equipped with sensors, cameras and control units. It would be possible to activate the tractor remotely via smartphone, and in a so-called ‘Shadow Follow Me’ mode, it is possible to have two or more tractors doing the same work in synchronised mode.
The electric and autonomous tractor is said to feature a 360-degree detection system, smart telematics and an automatic steering system. Through an off-board system, it is possible to monitor the tractor, as well as the battery level.

According to the manufacturer, the electric tractor is 90% quieter than we are used to from a diesel, and there would also be less vibration. According to the manufacturer, the tractor is also more aggressive, efficient and features better traction control than a diesel variant. The tractor is also said to change direction of travel more smoothly.

Commercial production is expected to start in late 2023, after which a wider range will also follow. The electric tractor will be presented under the New Holland brand; a Case IH version will also follow later. The tractor comes in a new colour: Clean Blue Colour. New Holland’s familiar leaf emblem is illuminated on the tractor and the rear lights also stand out from conventional diesel tractors.
