Farrming organization, Superior Broom Producers, on Thursday, March 24, received a grant of $80,000 from the St Lucia National Conservative Fund.
Paulina Ferdinand, president of Superior Broom Producers, located at La Point, Mon Repos, thanked the fund for their kind gesture, which she said will go a long way in developing the organization and making it more viable. According to her, the money will enable them to undertake certain projects, which will result in them being able to expand their operations.
“We are very grateful for the grant. It will help us a lot,” she said.
Ferdinand said they are developing a demonstration plot with organic herbs which they will be processing.
She identified one of their challenges as sourcing adequate funds to achieve their objectives.
However, she added that one of their challenges is now being gradually addressed with the assistance of the St Lucia National Conservative Fund.
“We were not computer literate, but now we are getting some training from the St Lucia National Conservative Fund, which we appreciate very much,” Ferdinand said.
Chief Executive Officer of the St Lucia National Conservative Fund, Craig Henry said: “We are very much elated that we provided some assistance to the institution. I think it’s worthy enough as a conservative fund, and given our objective to support biodiversity, sustainable development and natural resource conservation, we were happy to support the group.”
He said the $80,000 investment is an initial act that they are hoping to continue.
“We are definitely going to be monitoring, ensuring and supporting the group in terms of achieving its objectives,” Henry said.
He said the demonstration plot is supposed to be a learning process, and if it is successful, it can be replicated across the island.
“Given the importance of agriculture to this country, the St Lucia National Conservative Fund will be there to support other elements of the movement,” Henry said.
