Throughout the year, McDowell toured food & agricultural businesses in 50 cities from Marquette to Detroit
LANSING, Mich – Throughout 2022, Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) Director Gary McDowell met with food and agricultural businesses in over 50 cities across Michigan to learn how best MDARD can assist in their development and economic advancement within the food and agricultural industry.
“The heart of Michigan’s food and agriculture industry is within every small town across our state. Every local business, restaurant, processor, warehouse, and farm, has a story to tell,” said Director McDowell. “I had the privilege of traveling across our state to meet with our food and agriculture partners. I wanted business owners and community partners to know MDARD is committed to being their partner in growth and success. When MDARD and local businesses work together, we can move Michigan forward.”
Director McDowell visited several types of businesses including the Kids’ Food Basket in Grand Rapids, which aims to pursue a hunger-free West Michigan, a family-owned commercial fishery in Lake Huron founded in 1895, Northern Michigan University’s Self-Contained Sustainability Growing Center in Marquette, Detroit’s own vertical farming system, Planted Detroit, and a Christmas tree farm that has served the local community of Clare for three generations – going back to 1959.
“These tour opportunities have inspired me professionally and personally,” said McDowell. “I saw how the future of agriculture innovation is happening here in Michigan – the opportunities for careers, job growth, and economic expansion. I witnessed Michiganders’ dedication toward our food and agriculture industry, and I’m optimistic for its future.”
