TOWN OF SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. (WMTV) – Smoke poured out of a Statz Dairy Farm barn in rural Sun Prairie for nearly eight hours Friday evening, and officials believe a tractor was the source of the fire.
Multiple fire agencies were dispatched at 3:45 Friday afternoon. The roadway on County Road VV was blocked off, and more than 50 cattle were moved from the barn to a safer location.
The fire continued to burn due to the hay in the barn, according to officials at the scene. Fire fighters filled tubs with water to ensure there was enough to put out the flames.
“We are out in the rural part of our district and we have no fire hydrants out here. So why we are calling so many neighboring departments to assist is we need to provide water through a tender shuttle,” Sun Prairie Fire Department Assistant Chief John Austad said.
In a press release Saturday afternoon, Austad said that a tractor parked inside the barn was likely the cause of the fire. The extent of the damage has yet to be determined.
For over eight hours, fire units from Cottage Grove, Sun Prairie, Columbus, DeForest, Dane, McFarland, Marshall, Truax and Waunakee battled the fire.
NBC15 has a crew on the way to the scene and will update this story as details develop.
