Dr. Elizabeth Riley
Dr. Elizabeth Riley has been named the next Dean of Applied Engineering, Agriculture, and Skilled Trades at Alamance Community College, effective February 1.
Riley has served as the Department Head for Horticulture Technology & Agricultural Sciences since 2017, improving and expanding the department in many ways. In this role, Riley has expanded curriculum programs, increased enrollment, enhanced external partnerships including a green industry apprenticeship, secured funding to progress with the development of the 47-acre Bill and Nancy Covington Education Center, and partnered with Workforce Development to increase non-credit course offerings to align with local industry needs.
“For the past five years as the Department Head of Horticulture, I have been able to work with amazing students, faculty, and staff and that has been an absolute pleasure,” said Dr. Riley. “We have all worked together to continue ACC’s Horticulture program’s success as one of the top two-year programs in the country. I am excited to move into this new position so that I can continue to support the students, faculty, and staff in the Applied Engineering, Agriculture, and Skilled Trades division and assist their program areas in a positive way. This division serves so many crucial industries on a local and national level and I am excited to broaden my horizons and become a part of that.”
Riley holds Doctorate, Masters, and Bachelor of Science degrees in Horticulture Science from North Carolina State University. In addition to her education, she has experience in nursery and greenhouse plant production and teaching.
During her time as the department head, Dr. Riley has been the co-advisor for the departmental FLORA Club and the National Collegiate Landscape Competition Team. In 2020, she was awarded the ACC Excellence in Teaching Award for the Industrial Technologies division. Most recently she was the recipient of an Outstanding Professional Award from the NC Urban Forestry Council, and was presented with an Honorary State Future Farmers of American (FFA) degree.
