STAUNTON — For about 1 1/2 years, five head of cattle have been freely roaming properties just west of Staunton near the area of Frog Pond Road and Va. 262, according to the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities have been unable to determine who owns the trouble-causing cattle.
The sheriff’s office said the cattle have damaged several yards, fences and crops. One of the cattle was involved in an Oct. 3 vehicle crash.
On Friday, the pack of five cows was caught off Churchville Avenue with the use of a portable corral, according to Sheriff Donald Smith.
The owner of the cattle can claim the cows no later than Monday, Jan. 9, by contacting Smith at the sheriff’s office.
If nobody steps forward to claim the cows, Smith announced there will be a public auction at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the Staunton Union Stockyard on New Hope Road in Staunton. Smith said fees for trapping, feed, boarding and damages are attached to the animals.
Anyone wising to view the cattle can do so Monday at the stockyard from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
